The birds that we see today are linked to a particular group of dinosaurs called theropods. Within this group of dinosaurs, there are many species of which tyrannosaurus and velociraptor are some of the most well-known ones. In this blog, we’ll talk about the latter.
You may have watched velociraptor in the Jurassic Park movie where they were shown as Deinonychus in terms of behavior and looks. Deinonychus was a lot bigger than velociraptor and more aggressive as well. You’ll be surprised to know that velociraptor are actually of significantly shorter size as a fully-grown adult velociraptor was just 2 meters long. Thanks to Jurassic Park, Velociraptor has become one of the most well-known dinosaurs in the world, albeit inaccurately.
The reason why velociraptor is associated with birds so heavily is because of its physical features. It had similar hinged ankles, swivel-jointed wrists, and a forked bone formed by the fusion of the clavicles like we see in most birds. Their feet were also similar to that of modern birds barring a horny sheath that covered the toe and finger, which would have doubled the size of their feet.
These dinosaurs’ bodies had thin filaments on it and their tails and forearms had feathers, something which gave these dinosaurs a striking resemblance to modern-day birds. But there is one thing that these dinosaurs couldn’t do which modern birds are literally known for flying. Although these dinosaurs had all the features of living birds, they were actually flightless. But velociraptor made up for this by running on their two legs effectively. As a matter of fact, they are identified as fierce predators by scientists who hunted their prey on these two legs. But if you notice carefully, you can clearly see that this feature of a velociraptor is also rather bird-like. We’ve all seen birds spending more time walking than flying, haven’t we? Very few birds catch their prey while flying.
Since these dinosaurs are so famous around the world, there is usually a high demand for their fossils. Those who’re interested in purchasing these famous velociraptor raptor dinosaur teeth can get them at great prices on Buried Treasure Fossils.
